Can I move my website away from Wix later?
Not really, and this applies to most builders: Wix has no site export. You can copy your text and images manually and redirect your domain, and blog posts can be exported with workarounds, but the design and structure must be rebuilt on the new platform. Plan for it upfront: own your domain, keep content copies, and weigh lock-in before you build.
The lock-in is architectural, not malicious. A Wix site is not a folder of files but a configuration inside Wix’s systems: the pages exist as data their renderer interprets, which is why there is nothing portable to export. Squarespace, Strikingly, SITE123, and most closed builders share this design. The notable exceptions: WordPress (any flavor: the content exports as standard data, and a wordpress.com site moves to any host), 10Web (real WordPress underneath), and Webflow (exports static code on paid plans, though without the CMS).
What leaving Wix actually looks like: register or transfer your domain away first (always keep domain registration under your own control, ideally at an independent registrar, precisely for this day), manually save all text and download images, export blog posts via the available workarounds, then rebuild on the destination platform and point the domain there. For a 10-page site this is a weekend; for a 200-page site it is a project, and that asymmetry is why platforms price year one so sweetly.
The pragmatic posture: treat builder lock-in as a known cost rather than a scandal. If a builder serves your needs for years at a fair price, the lock-in never bites. Protect the two things that genuinely must remain yours: the domain (your address and accumulated SEO) and your content (keep masters of your text, images, and product data outside the platform). With those safe, even a forced migration is an inconvenience, not a hostage situation.
